Muhanga, 5th March 2015 – His Excellency Paul Kagame, President of the Republic of Rwanda yesterday inaugurates the Nyabarongo 1 Hydropower Plant (HPP) that has the capacity to generate 28 megawatts of electricity.
The plant was co-financed by Exim Bank of India and the government of Rwanda to the tune of USD 97.7 million. The Exim Bank loan amounted to USD 80million (about Rwf 56 billion) and USD 17.7 (Rwf 14 billion) was the government’s contribution. It was constructed by an Indian consortium of Angelique International Limited for civil Works, Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL) for Electro-Mechanical and Hydro-Mechanical Works and RSWI, a Canadian firm for supervision and has two units of 14 megawatts each.
The Hydroelectric power plant is located in Mushishiro Sector, Muhanga District, Southern Province and has been supplying electricity to the national grid since October 2014.
Speaking at the event, the President reiterated the government’s commitment to generate as much electricity as “We want to do everything we can to ensure that the country has enough electricity. Our goal is to make sure that every Rwandan wherever they may live benefit from the progress Rwanda is making”, Kagame said.
