H.E Paul Kagame, the President of the Republic of Rwanda inaugurated Giciye Hydro Power Plant on June, 5th 2014.
In the framework of increasing electricity access rate in Rwanda that a number of independent power producers are now participating in energy generation projects as a result of Government policy to encourage private sector involvement in the sector. It is in this regard that Giciye 4MW Hydropower Plant (HPP) located in Nyabihu District was developed by a local private investor “Rwanda Mountain Tea Ltd” (RMT Ltd).
Through a MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) and PPA (Power Purchase Agreement), the GoR (Government of Rwanda) supports Independent Power Producers by constructing access road and building transmission line to evacuate the power from the plant to the national grid.
Giciye hydropower plant was successfully completed and is set to produce maximum 4MW of power.
The residents of Nyabihu District are currently benefitting electricity from the plant, especially Rurembo Centre whereby 200 customers, 12 years basic education (12YBE), Primary school, Health Centre, SACCO, Parish and Rurembo Administrative Office, and connection activity to other households in Nyabihu still increasing.
