This was in the framework of “REG Umuganda”, an initiative taken to embrace the Rwandan culture of community engagement in public interest activities, where REG staff participate voluntarily to Umuganda and join the local citizens of the chosen site but also provide access to electricity to non-electrified houses that are near the electrical network.

In Mageragere, REG connected to the grid 43 houses including 40 houses of the IDP model village, a nursery school, a health center and the cell office.

While addressing the population in the meeting after umuganda, REG CEO, Eng. Ron Weiss said that Rwanda should be a model for many countries all over the world.

“People should come in Rwanda from all around the world to learn from you” he said.

He also added that REG is determined to contribute to the development of Rwanda and that in 7 years all the households in Rwanda will be accessing to electricity while in Kigali city this target is set to be achieved in 2 years.

“On behalf of the City of Kigali and on my own behalf, I express my appreciation for what has been done not only here in Kigali but all over the city and in Rwanda in general. We will keep working with you to make this city a modern city” said the Mayor of the City of Kigali who was the guest of honor at the event.
