Outgoing Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Rwanda Energy Group (REG) Jean Bosco Mugiraneza handed over office on Wednesday 24th May 2017 to the current Chief Executive Officer Ron Weiss.

At the handover ceremony that took place at the REG Headquarters, the incoming CEO Ron Weiss vowed to make sure that the country’s strategy and policy in energy is fulfilled.

Mr. Mugiraneza was appointed to head REG as its first CEO in July 2014 after the reforms that split EWSA into two new companies namely REG and WASAC.

During the three years of Mugiraneza tenure, access to electricity in the Rwandan community has risen from 21% to 32% while the generation capacity has doubled. According to Mugiraneza, REG still has a lot to do to achieve the country’s target. He recommended off-grid solutions as a way to reach the 100% access target.

“I am proud of what we did here and I appreciate the support I got from the Government. I am still around and I will support whenever the company needs me” said Mugiraneza.

REG not being able to make profit yet is one of the challenges to be addressed by the new CEO, Eng. Ron Weiss, as well as the reduction of losses in the transmission lines.

Ron Weiss is coming from Israel with a 27 years’ experience in all chain of electricity including 11 year in generation, 11 years in transmission and substation, and 5 years in projects of power station substation and environmental projects. He was the vice president of Israel Electric Corporation (IEC) which signed in 2015 a cooperation agreements with REG for technical support in areas of energy project development, energy transmission and distribution.

“To his Excellency the President of the Republic of Rwanda and to the people of Rwanda, I will try to the best of my ability to honor your vision of the energy sector for this country. I worked in Israel and around the world, we also worked in Rwanda helping with the master plan. I think I have the right experience for the job” said Ron Weiss.

REG Board Chairperson, Professor Manasseh Mbonye called on staff to support the incoming CEO as the company seeks to connect more households across the country.
